  THE NEW GULLWING

W197 is the internal code name for Daimler's hottest project in years -- a new sportscar equipped with gullwing doors. The latter-day Benz gullwing is scheduled to debut in 2010, and hopes are high that the car will become as successful as its famous predecessor from the Fifties and Sixties, the legendary 300 SL. So far only prototype mules of the new two-seater have been sighted and caught on camera. Those photos are here, along with a new artist's illustration of what the SL might look like when it bows in 2010. The new gullwing doesn't have an official name yet, but a pricetag in the $250,000 range is expected.

SLC

Back in July, AMG had released a small statement which announced that Mercedes and McLaren had discontinued their cooperation on the development of a smaller mid-engined SLR follow up known as the McLaren F2, and Mercedes had instead chosen their own in-house performance branch AMG to build a different supercar, known as the SLC.

SL BLACK SERIES

This camouflaged prototype for the Mercedes SL Black Series was spotted heading back to its off-site workshop in northern Germany. As one can see air management is apparently a big priority for the SL Black Series, with the vented hood and deep front bumper intakes which lead to extraction ducts behind the front wheel flares. Judging from the sculpting on the car's rear deck lid, the large rear wing standing tall on this test car actually appears to be retractable, allowing for smoother lines when speeds allow.
